Étretat and Honfleur in one day

Chalk cliffs in the morning, a 17th-century harbour in the afternoon, 50 minutes apart over one of Europe's longest cable-stayed bridges. The classic Normandy pairing, and how to time it.

Étretat and Honfleur sit on opposite sides of the Seine estuary, about 55 km apart. The Pont de Normandie links them in roughly 50 minutes. That's why almost every Normandy coast tour pairs them: one is all landscape, the other all town.

The questions are which first, how long in each, and whether you'd rather swap Honfleur for Rouen, Deauville or Giverny. Answers below, with the 2026 tours that do each version.

The quick answer

Yes, Étretat and Honfleur fit easily in one day: they're about 50 minutes apart over the Pont de Normandie. From Paris you get about 2 hours in each; from the Le Havre cruise port, up to 3. Do Étretat first if you can: morning light on the Aval arch and emptier car parks. The coach from Paris at $171 does exactly that. Honfleur needs 2 hours; the cliffs need at least 2.

Can you see Étretat and Honfleur in one day?

Yes. They're about 55 km apart, roughly 50 minutes by road. From Paris you get about 2 hours in each; from the Le Havre port, 3.

The pairing works because the two places need different amounts of time. Honfleur is compact: the old harbour, the wooden church and a lunch take about two hours. Étretat is a walk, and walks stretch. Two hours covers the beach and one clifftop; three lets you reach the Manneporte.

The day's length depends on where you start. From Paris, every tour runs 12 to 13 hours. From a ship in Le Havre, the private tours take about 7. The Paris day trip guide covers the drive.

The classic pairing from Paris: about two hours at the cliffs, then two in Honfleur's old harbour.

Should you visit Étretat or Honfleur first?

Étretat first. In the morning the sun lights the Aval arch, the paths are quieter and you can still park. Honfleur's harbour looks its best in the afternoon and evening.

The Aval cliff faces roughly east across the bay. Morning sun hits it full on; by late afternoon you're looking at it against the light from the promenade. Parking in Étretat fills by late morning in summer, and the Paris tours start arriving around the same time. Honfleur copes better with crowds: more streets, more cafés.

The coach from Paris follows that order. The small-group day does the opposite, Honfleur at 11:00 and Étretat at 14:00, because it adds Rouen at the end. One coach guest wanted the balance shifted anyway: "Honfleur was a nice second stop, but 2.5 hours felt like too much time there. I would have preferred more time in Étretat."

How should you split the time between them?

At least 2 hours in Étretat, 1.5 to 2 in Honfleur. Here is how the tours split it.

How do you get between Étretat and Honfleur?

By road over the Pont de Normandie, about 50 minutes. The toll for a car is 6.10 euros since 1 May 2026. By public transport you change in Le Havre.

The Pont de Normandie crosses the Seine estuary between Le Havre and Honfleur. It opened in 1995 and its main span is 856 metres; the views from the top of the deck are worth looking up from your phone for. The car toll went up 20 cents to 6.10 euros on 1 May 2026 to fund repairs on the two Seine bridges (French parliament record). Tours include it.

Without a car: LiA bus 21 from Étretat to the Le Havre stations (about an hour), then Nomad line 122 from the Le Havre coach station to Honfleur (Nomad). It's doable, but with waits it eats half the day.

What can you see in Honfleur in two hours?

The Vieux Bassin, the Lieutenance gatehouse, the wooden church of Sainte-Catherine and its separate bell tower, and lunch on the quay. It's all within 10 minutes' walk.

  • The Vieux Bassin. The old harbour, ringed by tall, narrow slate-fronted houses. Walk the whole loop.
  • La Lieutenance. The old house of the king's lieutenant, guarding the harbour mouth.
  • Sainte-Catherine. France's largest wooden church, built by shipwrights, with its bell tower standing apart across the square.
  • The Jardin Retrouvé, a small garden on the coach itinerary, for ten quiet minutes.
  • Eugène Boudin's town. The painter who taught Monet to work outdoors was born here; his museum is a short walk up the hill.

Which tours do Étretat and Honfleur together?

From Paris: the coach ($171), the private day with the gardens ($320), the small group with Rouen ($429) and the private day with Giverny ($669). From Le Havre: two private driver tours.

The coach is the value pick: 4.8 from 9 reviews, about two hours in each town. The private day with the gardens costs nearly twice as much but picks up at your hotel and adds a guided walk on both sides. One guest: "[...] the cliffs are even more spectacular in person. We had enough time to explore, take photos, and really appreciate the beauty of the landscape."

From the ship, the private tour gives the most time at the cliffs, about 3 hours, but the driver isn't a guide. The local driver runs the day at your pace for up to four people. The shuttle covers Étretat alone; the cruise port guide compares them.

Rouen, Deauville or Giverny instead of Honfleur?

Rouen if you like cathedrals and old streets, Deauville for a sandy beach and boutiques, Giverny for Monet. Each one squeezes Étretat to 1 h 30 to 1 h 45.

Three towns in a day means three short stops. If Monet is the draw, a separate morning in Giverny is calmer: see Monet, Étretat and Giverny.

Is it better to stay a night on the coast?

If you can, yes. A night in Honfleur or Étretat lets you see the cliffs at sunset and the harbour lit up, without a 5-hour round trip from Paris.

Stay in Honfleur and drive or take a taxi to Étretat for the morning; stay in Étretat and you have the clifftops to yourself before 9:00. In late June the sun sets around 22:00, so a summer evening on the Amont side is long. Le Havre is the budget base: bus 21 reaches Étretat in an hour, and the Nomad 122 runs to Honfleur.
