Étretat in winter 2026-27

Winter empties the beach and turns the chalk gold by mid-afternoon. It also shortens the days, thins the coach timetable and closes the gardens. Here is what to plan around.

Étretat does not shut for winter. The cliffs, the promenade and the clifftop paths are open every day of the year, and parking is paid all year round. What changes from November is everything around them: the paid sights, the buses, the light and the weather.

This post covers 2 November 2026 to the end of March 2027, with the dates the operators had published by mid-October 2026 and, where the winter timetable is not out yet, the pattern they have followed.

The quick answer

The beach and both clifftops stay open all winter, but the promenade and beach close during orange or red storm warnings. The Jardins d'Étretat close after 29 November 2026 and have reopened in mid-February in recent seasons. In December the sun sets around 17:00. Coach 504 from Bréauté-Beuzeville runs Friday to Sunday only from November to April; LiA bus 21 from Le Havre runs every day. Parking is no longer free in low season.

What is open in Étretat from November 2026 to March 2027?

The cliffs, the beach and the promenade, every day. The Jardins close after 29 November; the Clos Lupin opens on weekends and school holidays; cafés and hotels thin out midweek.

The Jardins d'Étretat run their last weeks of 2026 on short hours, 10:00 to 17:00 from 2 to 29 November, at the 11-euro low-season adult price. Then they close. The 2027 reopening date was not published by mid-October; the gardens opened on 16 February in 2026 and also in mid-February the year before, so expect the same window.

Le Clos Lupin, Maurice Leblanc's house, keeps winter hours from October to March: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and school holidays, 10:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:30, closed on 25 December and 1 January (Seine-Maritime Tourisme). Last winter the Étretat tourist office on Place Maurice Guillard opened Tuesday to Saturday. Weekday lunch is fine; a Tuesday dinner takes more searching.

How much daylight do you get in Étretat in winter?

Between about 8 and 10 hours. On the shortest day the sun rises around 08:53 and sets around 17:01, with usable light for roughly 40 minutes either side.

Étretat sits on the western edge of the Paris time zone, so mornings start late and sunsets come later than you might expect. The times below are calculated for Étretat (49.7 degrees north) in local time; timeanddate.com gives Le Havre, 25 km away, within a couple of minutes of them.

For photos, the low winter sun is a gift. From early afternoon it lights the Aval cliff and the arch from the south-west, and on a clear day the chalk turns warm. Be on the Aval clifftop by 15:30 in December and you have the best hour of the day.

Does the 504 coach from Bréauté-Beuzeville run in winter?

Yes, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, from November to April. On other days, go via Le Havre and LiA bus 21, which runs daily.

Nomad's line page states the pattern: the 504 runs every day from 1 April to 31 August, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between November and April. The current timetable is valid only to 1 November 2026, and the winter sheet was not online by mid-October. On the autumn sheet the 8:40 train from Paris Saint-Lazare connects with a coach reaching Étretat Le Grandval at 11:26, and the last coach back leaves at 17:25 or 18:30 depending on the day. Check the date you want in the Atoumod app or on SNCF Connect, which shows the coach leg.

The town's own visitor page gives two off-season alternatives: train to Le Havre and LiA bus 21 or 13, or train to Fécamp and Nomad coach 509 along the coast. The LiA route is the reliable one midweek. Full details, fares and stops are in our parking and buses post.

Which Étretat tours still run in winter?

The Paris coach trip and the Le Havre shuttles keep selling dates through the winter. Anything built around Monet's Giverny waits until April.

The coach day trip from Paris leaves the Arc de Triomphe at 7:30 and gets you to Étretat by about 10:00, so its 2 hours at the cliffs fall in good light even in December. Honfleur comes after lunch, and by the time you leave the harbour the December sun is gone. Nobody minds: the Vieux Bassin looks better with its lights on.

Cruise ships still call at Le Havre in winter, and the cruise port shuttle runs on their schedule; guests report rides in November and February. Wind is the real risk. One booker wrote that "our captain had to cancel this port due to high winds" and added the shuttle company refunded "immediately". Skip the Giverny, Honfleur and Étretat day until spring: Monet's house and garden close on 1 November, so its first stop is shut all winter.

What happens in Étretat when a storm hits?

The promenade and the beach close, and swimming is banned, whenever Météo-France puts out an orange or red wind or storm warning. The clifftops get dangerous long before that.

Order n°363/2025 of 23 October 2025, on the town's orders page, makes the closure automatic: access to the promenade and the beach is "strictement interdit" during strong wind or storm warnings, in particular orange or red alerts. Waves throw pebbles over the sea wall in big westerlies.

Up top, wind is the problem. The paths have no rails for long stretches, gusts come off the sea sideways, and the 5-metre rule from the 2025 order still applies. Rain and frost also loosen the chalk: the tourist office warns that the cliffs are always subject to rockfalls, and winter is when many of them happen. Check Météo-France vigilance the evening before. Yellow is a walk with a hat. Orange is a café day.

Grey days are common. Orange-alert days close the beach.

Is Étretat worth visiting in winter?

Yes, on a clear day. You get the clifftops almost to yourself, better light than in summer and easier parking. Pick a weekend for the coach, or go via Le Havre.

Étretat takes about 1.5 million visitors a year in a village of about 1,250 people, and the 2026 busy-day order closes the centre to cars when the car parks fill. None of that applies on a January weekday. The trade-off is fewer open restaurants, no gardens until mid-February and a sunset that ends the day before 17:30.

Our view: go between mid-February and March if you want the Jardins and longer days, and December or January if you want the place empty. Bring proper shoes; the chalk paths turn to grease in the rain. Month-by-month advice is in the best time to visit guide.

Coach from the Arc de Triomphe, about 2 hours at the cliffs, then Honfleur. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
